Abstract

The manufacturing industry accounts for a large percentage of Canada's annual Gross National Product, yet Canada occupies a small share within the manufacturing industry on a global scale. This article explores the competitive nature of the industry and the challenges of achieving sustainable competitive differentiation. Based on the approaches outlined in this article, certain processes can aid in the organizational change towards a sustainable advantage such as the customer buy value, the mapping process and competitive value equation. With the implementation of these processes, economic development professionals will help to prioritize and achieve market driven advantage within their organization globally.

Author Biography

Leo Ditchun

Leo Ditschun is President of LDA Inc., a management consulting and training firm focusing on  competitiveness of manufacturing firms and creation of Strategic Business Alliances to improve market  penetration. Prior to that, he was Vice President with Management of Technology and Innovation  Institute (MTI), an organization which provided expertise on effective technology management and transfer processes. He has almost 20 years work experience with a major computer vendor supplying to  the manufacturing sector. Recently, LDA Inc. was engaged by the Economic Development Commission of Durham Region to provide training to local manufacturers. Mr. Ditschun has a B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo and is a member of the A.P.E.O.
