Abstract

The rapidly changing business environment due to economic and trade conditions as well as globalization calls for development and implementation of information technology infrastructure. This article argues for strategic alliances between municipal governments and Bell Canada. The article also presents several reasons for this alliance, the most major one being that Bell Canada is a superior telecommunications infrastructure that can enable economic development through its services. Telecommunication and other information-intensive industries have the potential to not only create employment but to also increase investment, competitiveness and productivity of businesses in Canada. This in turn fuels economic growth. This approach, to utilize the nations telecommunication infrastructure in economic development practices, has been undertaken by many other countries in the world. However, for this alliance to work effectively both Bell and the municipalities must assist and support each other.
